Health Warnings For Occasional Smokers And Cheap Alcohol

Health experts are raising concerns over cheap alcohol and occasional smokers.

People who smoke occasionally carry almost the same risk of heart disease as daily smokers - and are less likely to quit than those with a more regular habit.

The Royal College of Physicians in Ireland warns that most of them seem unaware of the risks.

Dr Des Cox is chair of the college's Policy Group on Tobacco

"We as a group also would like that some research is done in the area to figure out why people continue to occasionally smoke - and maybe this will help us come up with more novel ways of helping them quit".

While a survey of drink prices has suggested men can buy health-damaging amounts of alcohol for as little as €8.49, and women for €5.49.

Alcohol Action Ireland has released its annual Alcohol Market Review and Price Survey.

It says a "highly sophisticated pricing model" means alcohol affordability is universal throughout urban, regional or rural Ireland.

The survey highlights that cider products remain the cheapest, strongest alcohol products available to the off-trade consumer.

Beer products are the second cheapest, just ahead of wine and spirits such as gin and vodka.
