Fianna Fáil has criticised the government's record on mental health services for children and adolescents in the city.

The party says there are 60% fewer staff than necessary providing Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in Dublin.

In 2018, 84 children and teenagers were admitted to adult units.

That's up from 68 in 2016.

Referrals

The junior health minister, Jim Daly, has said that all referrals to CAMHS are assessed on their clinical presentation.

He said that while more than 80% of cases have to wait up to 12 weeks for an appointment, urgent cases are seen the same day.

Deputy Daly admitted there have been recruitment and retention problems with staff in the mental health service.

He said that efforts to address this are ongoing but in the meantime a number of digital initiatives to get the clinician to the patient as quickly as possible.
