Good Friday Drink Ban Encourages Binging Says Survey

Restaurateurs say the ban on selling alcohol on Good Friday costs the sector 15 million euro in revenue.

The Restaurants Association of Ireland is calling for the law to be changed, saying its 'unacceptable' in a multi-cultural and multi-religious society.

They say its unfair that some venues are granted a licence to serve drink today, including some greyhound stadiums.

It comes as new survey highlights the generation gap when it comes to the ban on Good Friday drinking.

Research by Ignite, shows nearly half of over 45s are in favour of the ban staying in place.

It drops to just over a quarter of people aged between 18 and 24.

It also shows over half of those surveyed believe it encourages binge drinking at house parties.
