Bob Geldof says he's handing back his Freedom of the City of Dublin today.

He says it's in protest at Myanmar's de-facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi holding the same honour.

She has been criticised for failing to deal with ethnic cleansing of the minority Rohingya Muslim community, which has led to more than 600 thousand people fleeing from Myanmar to Bangladesh.

In a statement, Mr Geldof says he is a "proud Dubliner" but that her association with the city "shames us all".

Lord Mayor Micheal MacDonncha says he agrees with Bob Geldof's position but says he finds it "ironic that he makes this gesture while proudly retaining his title as Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, given the shameful record of British imperialism across the globe."
