The French president has told off a teenager who greeted him with his nickname "Manu".

It happened when Emmanuel Macron travelled to Fort Mont Valérian near Paris yesterday, for an event honouring World War II Resistance fighters.

While the president spoke to members of the crowd, one teenager - who also sang a few lines of a socialist anthem - greeted the French leader by saying 'Ca vu, Manu'.

In France, 'Manu' is used as a shortened version of Emmanuel.

Emmanuel Macron told the boy: "You can act like a clown, but today we are singing the national anthem.

"You address me as 'Mr President of the Republic' or plain 'mister', OK?"

He added: "You need to do things the right way, even if you want to lead a revolution one day."

After the teenager asked why anyone should aim for honour grades instead of just passing ones, Macron added: "You can't be satisfied with just the minimum.

"Those you came to honour today... they didn't aim for just the minimum."

Macron himself posted a video of the exchange on Twitter - noting: "Respect is a minimum in the Republic [...] However, this does not prevent a relaxed conversation from taking place."
