Figures Show Record Numbers Are Homeless

A new record of 9104 people are homeless and living in places like B&Bs and hotels across Ireland.

The January figures released by the Department of Housing show that 3267 of those are children.

The number is up by 517 on December's figure which is a 6 percent increase in one month alone.

Focus Ireland says they show the Government is dramatically failing to do enough the ease the crisis.

In a statement this afternoon Dun Laoghaire TD Boyd Barrett lashed out at the government describing the numbers as an "utter failure".

He said that it is "now becoming increasingly clear to me that both RAS and HAP are contributing to homelessness."

"In the last couple of weeks, our office has had a stream of people come into us, who are in RAS or HAP tenancies but are in receipt of notices to quit", he said.

The latest figures, published by the department show that in all categories of homelessness the figures have once again increased.

There are now 5837 adults in emergency accommodation, while family Homelessness has also increased with 1191 families with 2509 children now in temporary accommodation.

The figures come as the public is asked to report anyone they see sleeping rough during the freezing weather.

Labour Housing spokesperson, Jan O’Sullivan, said “while their intentions may be well placed, these figures show the Government is failing to get to grips with this crisis."

“Targets set under Rebuilding Ireland to get families out of hotels by 2016 have not been met and targets for Rapid Build and Local Authority are also missing the mark", she said.

Deputy O'Sullican said there is a "complete lack of a sense of urgency" to deliver "long-term solutions."

She said she was "particularly alarmed" at reports babies who are living in hotels are not reaching their developmental milestones.
