Have you ever watched a detective thriller and thought you could do a better job?

Or considered throwing away your career choices after watching the very cool and mysterious Sherlock Holmes?

Until now private investigators in Ireland weren't regulated, but if you fancy yourself as a bit of a Hetty Wainthrop, you'll soon have to go to PI school.

The Justice Minister has announced that from November 1st 2015 contractors providing private investigator services will require a licence to do so.

The required licence will have to be given out by the Private Security Authority.

In addition, only those licensed by the PSA will be able to advertise or represent themselves as a Licensed Private Investigator.

It will be an offence for anyone to employ an unlicensed Private Investigator.

Similarly, it will be unlawful for someone to offer services as a Private Investigator without a licence after November 1st.

Minister Frances Fitzgerald said that the need for stricter regulations came following a number of investigations which revealed some "undesirable activities and practices" by Private Investigators.
