A family who had been homeless for two years, and rehoused in Ballyfermot, have been forced to leave their new home.

Toni Reid and her family have been in the property on the Kylemore Road for less than a month.

Dublin Fire Brigade were called to the scene in the early hours of Wednesday morning after a neighbour heard screaming.

The blaze started at the front door and didn't spread past the hallway but the house has been rendered uninhabitable for the moment.

The Peter McVerry Trust had made the property available under the government's Repair and Leasing scheme. Toni and her two daughters had photos taken with the Housing Minister when they got the keys to the house late last month.

The Trust's Pat Doyle has told 98FM the family have been moved to a two bedroom apartment so they haven't been rendered homeless by the suspected arson attack.

"They were rehoused within hours. They thankfully weren't in the building at the time. They're being supported by the Trust and our job now is to get that house back into use."

The family will have the option of staying in the other property if they don't want to move back to the house.

Gardai have confirmed they're investigating.
