Gardai across Dublin are hunting for a dangerous bank robber who's on the run after stabbing two prisoner officers at Tallaght Hospital.

Derek Brockwell was being escorted back to Portlaoise Prison after medical treatment this afternoon, when he pulled a blade and stabbed one officer in the arm, and the other in the stomach.

The 54-year-old, who's seving seven years behind bars for a string of violent robberies across Dublin, has been described as an extremely dangerous and violent criminal.

The two injured prison officers were part of a three man escort who brought Derek Brockwell to Tallaght hospital from Portlaoise prison for some medical treatment this afternoon.

Sources have told 98FM News that, Brockwell somehow got his hands on a blade and stabbed one of the officers in the arm. The other was seriously wounded after being stabbed in the stomach area.

The notorious bank robber then made good his escape and the alarm was immediately raised.

In 2013, the 54-year-old, who was on the run from UK authorities at the time, was jailed for seven years for a spate of robberies across Dublin, including the robbery of a newsagent and post office on Merrion Row during which he pushed a gun into a shop assistant’s arm and ordered her colleagues to hand over the cash.

He’s described as an extremely dangerous and violent criminal and a city-wide Garda manhunt is now underway to catch him.
