Gardai are investigating after Dublin Zoo was scammed out almost half a million euro.

It was targeted by cyber criminals in what's known as "invoice redirect" or "CEO fraud" last week.

That's where fraudsters hack an official email account and ask future payments to be made to a different bank account.

In this case, the scammers pretended to be a contracting company that was carrying out work for Dublin Zoo.

Once the alarm was raised Gardai moved swiftly to freeze the payments of almost €500,000.

They managed to claw back around €370,000 but it appears the remainder may have been lost.

Writing about the case in today's Irish Sun Crime Editor Stephen Breen has told 98FM News the Garda National Ecomomic Crime Bureau has been investigating a number of similar scams in recent months.

Victims have included and a funeral directors firm and Meath County Council.

"It's not known where the fraudsters are based, but on this occasion some of the payments have been traced back to Pakistan."

In a statement, Dublin Zoo says they're "co-operating with An Garda Síochána on a case of invoice redirect fraud. No Dublin Zoo customer details have been compromised."
