Dublin is getting a new university.

It's being formed by the merger of DIT and the Institutes of Technology in Blanchardstown and Tallaght.

It will be called Technological University Dublin and have a population of almost 30 thousand students.

Announcing details of the new university for the first time, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, said "technological universities are central to delivering on this vision and will stimulate a more balanced growth of population and employment across Ireland."

He said the multi-campus technological universities will "bring greater social and economic benefits".
