The four Dublin councils earned €35.9 million combined in parking charges and fines.

It's more than the rest of the country put together.

The figure includes fees for drivers paying to park on streets - and fines for illegal parking.

It's more than half the national total of €70 million, according to figures in today's Sunday Independent.

The city council took in €29.3 million -- up €4.4 million on 2013.

That income is expected to rise in the years ahead.

The council extended the boundaries of the most expensive parking zones back in July.

Menwhile Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown collected close to €4.3 million -- up €800,000 on 2013.

Fingal collected €1.6 million, and South Dublin just €630,000
