A Dublin based Garda has been found guilty of possessing photos and videos of children, some younger than ten, being subjected to sexual acts.

Joseph O’Connor was convicted on four of the five counts he faced, which took place on various dates in 2011.

As part of the investigation, the court heard Garda Joe O’Connor’s laptop and phone were seized and analysed by IT experts.

92 image files of children under the age of 17 being subjected to a sexual act were found on his Dell computer along with 136 images of child exposure and 85 movie files of children engaged in sexual acts with men.

The trial heard that many of the files were duplicates and were found in various parts of the laptop, including inaccessible areas of its hard-drive.

Some of the files involved children under the age of 10.

Garda O’Connor denied the charges and his defence pointed out there was no password on his computer so it could have been accessed by anyone.

However, the jury today convicted him of four of the five counts he faced. He was found not guilty of the possession of 56 duplicate images.

The 58-year-old, who was suspended from the force pending the outcome of this prosecution, wasn't sentenced today but is due back in court next week.
