It looks almost certain that 100 drugs like ecstasy, magic mushrooms and crystal meth will be illegal again from midnight.
Politicians have passed emergency laws, which the President is expected to approve this afternoon - yesterday a court ruled that existing laws were unconstitutional.
That means that, for about 37 hours, more than 100 drugs are effectively legal to posses, but not to sell, import or supply.
Politicians had been prepared for this court hearing, and had drafted up improved laws just in case. They've now been passed by both the Dail and the Seanad and should take effect from midnight tonight.
However, some believe an opportunity to reform Ireland's drug laws has been missed.
Stuart Clarke, the Deputy Editor of Hotpress told 98FM's Dublin Talks with Adrian Kennedy and Jeremy Dixon that "ideally people don't take drugs, but the prohibition isn't working, hasn't worked, and is actually costing lives".
"I'm not saying a free-for-all for any minute, but drug policy is not dictated in this country by research or fact".
The Misuse of Drugs (Amendment) Bill is expected to be signed into law by President Higgins this afternoon, but won't take effect until midnight.
