Award-winning director Neil Jordan has donated his archive to the National Library.

The director of Michael Collins and other famous films handed in more than 120 boxes of material from throughout his career.

The documents from films such as The Crying Game and Breakfast on Pluto along with other works will be digitised and put on display for the general public in 2019.

Dr Sandra Collins, director of the National Library of Ireland, says the donation has huge meaning - particularly the content from Michael Collins.

She said: "I think we will see a great resurgence in that film... and I hope that will lead people back to the archival materials and collections related to that period of history here."

Today's donation came as the nation collectively seethed about the scandal of families being left to sleep in Garda stations.

The filmmaker offered some insight into what it's like to be homeless, as he faced the situation in London in the 1970s.

He explained: "I just fell through the cracks. And it wasn't due to alcohol or drugs or anything like that.

"I had some money to get an apartment for a bunch of people who were meant to arrive. They never arrived, the money ran out and I ended up on the street.

"Within two days I became absolutely invisible. People literally do not see you, they never make eye contact. You also get dirty, filthy. And there's also an aspect of shame to it."

He added: "Of course there's something that can be done about it. The first thing is to look at people. To treat homeless people as if they're human beings and not part of the pavement."
