Diageo has removed itself from the board of the 'Stop out of control drinking' campaign, after criticism that the presence of the drinks giant undermined its independence.

The company's involvement in the campaign had provoked a large amount of controversy, however it will continue to provide funding for it.

The head of Diageo Ireland, David Smith, says he's pulling out after board members were put under pressure because of a perceived lack of independence.

An online petition received hundreds of signatures calling for Diageo to withdraw completely.

But David Smith says they won't withdraw funding from the campaign.
