DCU Students Protest Over Accommodation Costs

Dozens of DCU students are holding a protest in anger at rising rents.

They say prices and fees at two apartment complexes close to the university keep rising - despite no improvement works being carried out.

They're calling for the private company that runs the Shanowen blocks to reverse the hikes.

Podge Henry, Vice President for Welfare and Equality in DCU Student's Union, said "if we cannot afford to sleep in Shanowen we will sleep outside Shanowen".

Podge explained that students are now "being charged €9,000 for a nine month lease of substandard accommodation."

These prices have increased six times since opening and the rate has over doubled but no improvements have been made", he said.

DCU SU and students are calling for the total reversal of these increases and for the creation of legislation to protect students from being exploited further in the future.
