An early morning fire at a school in Coolock in Dublin has caused part of the building's roof to cave in.

The Education Minister has been assessing the damage and says work is underway to find temporary classrooms for students.

The alarm was raised at Scoil Chaitríona in Coolock just after 6 this morning.

Six units of the fire brigade were fighting the blaze at one point, before it was eventually brought under control.

Its caused significant damage to the senior section of the primary school that houses around 200 pupils from 2nd to 6th class.

The roof has collapsed, a number of classrooms have been gutted and several windows have blown out.

Education Minister Joe McHugh visited the school,  and said his officials have already been on site assessing the damage.

"We have a hisotry of dealing with crises in schools in the last twelve months in terms of other schools, so we have a team in place to do this", he said.

Superintendent Gerry Donnelly said an investigation is now underway into what caused the fire.

"That will involve a technical examination to determine the cause of the fire... we'll also enquire with the school security company", he said.
