More than 7,000 trees of all varieties have been cut down across the capital in the last 18 months.

The majority of councils cited trip hazards as well as storm damage and tree diseases as the reason for the felling.

According to today's Irish Times, South Dublin County Council cut down the most trees in the capital since January 2018.

They cut down more than 1,500- however they planted more than 3,000 in the same period.

Tree Felling

The issue of tree felling has come under increased scrutiny over the last few months following a number of high profile removals.

Many residents across the capital are up in arms over proposals to cut up to 5,000 trees to allow for the new Bus Connects corridor.

But speaking to the Independent newspaper Gerald Mills, Associate Professor of Geography at UCD, has warned that far more trees may be in danger.

The National Transport Authority has stated it does not yet know how many trees will need to be felled.
