A stationless bikes company is claiming the city council is undermining the whole point of its service.

Dublin City Council is to award permits to two bike sharing companies this month, after a false start to the service last year.

Stationless bikes work by using GPS and a smartphone app. It allows people to rent bikes from random locations without needing to return them to a docking station.

But the local authority is requiring bikes to be locked to wracks similar to those already around the city, instead of an immobiliser to prevent theft.

Green Party councillor and cycling advocate, Ciaran Cuffe, says bike sharing firm Ofo is the one that's missing the point

"One of the flaws is that sometimes they're left in the middle of the footpath, leaving an obstruction for people who have disabilities or a visual impairment. So we're saying they have to be locked to bike stands. We're going to roll out a lot more of them in the city."
