Dublin City Council is to consider allowing log cabins in back gardens to help tackle the housing crisis.

They'd be erected on private land behind existing residential properties.

It's been suggested that authorities could turn a “blind eye” to planning regulations, once there are no objections from neighbours.

People Before Profit Councillor John Lyons is in favour of the motion.

However, he thinks there should be a time-limit for how long the cabin can stay.

He said: "I would say that five years would be a fair timeframe to put on it.

"We'd have to have that debate in the city council chamber, but that to my mind would give young couples in particular some time to save up some money."

He added: "I think it's a rather sensible, modest proposal that could help a lot of families who at the moment are suffocating with ever increasing rents."

However, he stressed that the idea would need to be 'interrogated' and debated by authorities before it goes ahead.
