Local politicians have urged anyone with information to come forward after a man was shot in Coolock last night.

It happened at Belcamp Crescent near Darndale Park at around half past seven, and gardaí are investigating.

A man in his 20s was taken to Beaumont Hospital where he was treated for gunshot wounds, and his injuries are not believed to be life threatening

Sinn Féin councillor Mícheál Mac Donncha has condemned the incident.

"It's very distressing for everybody in the area. Unfortunately we're seeing these incidents around the city," he said.

"It's no reflection on any particular area where they happen -- it's a reflection on the thugs who carry out these actions. I would back the appeal by gardaí for any witnesses to come forward."

Meanwhile Councillor Allison Gilliland of Labour said: "Yesterday’s shooting in Belcamp shows the urgent need to increase the number of local community Gardaí. For too long low level anti-social behaviour has gone unresponded to due to lack of local Garda resources."

"This sends out the message that this behaviour is acceptable and allows many young people engaged in such behaviour to become involved in more serious behaviour."
