There are calls for more gardai in Ballyfermot.

Ten more have been promised for the area before the end of the year but locals say a lot more are needed.

It comes as concerns are raised about a large number of young people gathering outside the shops on Ballyfermot Road after 9pm and playing music on boomboxes.

Locals say up to 50 can gather at anyone time - particularly in the nice weather - and it's quite intimidating.

Cllr Vincent Jackson lives in the area. He said: ‘Over the last few months we’ve seen a problem in Ballyfermot with very large groups of young people congregating around the shops on Ballyfermot Road. They’re can be 30 and up to 50 at times and they are making a nuisance on the traders and the people who live in the general vicinity. We don’t see an adequate response from the gardai.’

Cllr Daithi Doolin says more resources are needed in Ballyfermot and he wants a meeting with the Justice Minister.

He said: ‘The people of Ballyfermot deserve a proper police service like those in Foxrock or Blackrock or any other part of Dublin. The Justice Minister needs to meet with local reps and councillors to see the crisis that is in Ballyfermot. It’s under resourced.’
