The City Council is being accused of sectioning off a children's play area for development without consulting those who use it.

Community groups from the Dolphin House area will hold a protest against the move this afternoon.

Dannielle McKenna, the Team Leader of Dolphin House Homework Club, said that the space is "crucial to the development of children and young people in the area" and that they were "shocked and dismayed to find this land grab take place without any consultation."

The group is calling for the land to be "returned urgently and the original wall re-erected so that children can play in a safe and creative space."

In a statement, Dublin City Council confirmed it has given permission to a construction company to build a new Primary Health Care facility on the site.

Dublin City Council said that MDY Construction Limited knocked a boundary wall which, following an inspection, was found to be in a "poor and unstable condition."

"Given the condition of the wall and the fact that minors were using it to play football against, on the ground of Health and safety the City Council took the decision to install a hoarding preventing access to it and to subsequently grant MDY Construction Limited a licence for this portion of land."

The Council said MDY Construction Limited has agreed to demolish the wall and construct a new boundary wall.
