A major clean-up's underway after plastic fibers used during development works at Dun Laoghaire sea-baths escaped into the sea.

The strips of plastic started washing up along the south Dublin coastline on Friday and were spotted by swimmers at the Forty Foot and Sandycove Beach.

SIAC, a construction company working on the redevelopment of the sea baths has confirmed that plastic fibers were washed into the sea while concrete was being poured at the site.

They've launched a massive clean-up assisted by teams from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

Mayor of Dun Laoghaire, Councillor Ossian Smyth is outraged.

"It's a major spill of plastic into the sea, and they're little pieces of plastic about the size of toothpicks, and they float.

"It's very concerning, it's a very large quantity of these little bits in the sea. We're worried about it from the point of view of marine life and swimmers.

"We've got sign's up to warn people."
