An historic class action against the poor quality of some local authority housing is being taken to Europe.
The case is being taken by residents of 20 council estates in Dublin, Cork and Limerick.
They say living with persistent damp, mould, bad smells, poor plumbing and a lack of central heating is impacting on their families mental and physical health and causing them to miss work and school.
Residents say the sub-standards conditions and a lack of independent body to complaint to, is in breach of their rights.
The group received confirmation yesterday that the case will be considered by the European Committee of Social Rights.
A decision on the complaints should be made within a year.
The government will now have to respond to the complaint.
