Stricter enforcement of cars parking illegally in cycle lanes could be on the way.

The government has ordered a review into the practice following claims that clampers where turning a "blind eye" on the issue.

In 2016, 268 fixed penalty notices were issued by Gardai on the issue in 2016. That then rose to 417 last year.

Despite these latest figures, Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan has voiced his concerns, saying the it was a serious problem and that the practice was unacceptable.

He has since ordered the review be carried out.

Ciarán Ferrie of iBike Dublin has welcomed the governments move.

He says, "anyone who cycles around Dublin will know that there is hardly a cycle lane in the city that doesn't have someone parking on it at some point.

"We have been campaigning for some time to have action taken on this but nothing has happened. We are now delighted to see this initiative by the minister."
