Dublin City Council’s being asked to throw a civic reception for the Yes Equality team.

A Fine Gael Councillor’s made the request to highlight the work the group did during the marriage equality referendum campaign.

While thousands were able to celebrate a Yes vote in Dublin Castle last Saturday, many more weren’t able to get through the gate.

Noel Rock says the referendum campaign got people engaged in the process who would never have been involved in anything like it in the past.

He’s written to the Lord Mayor and City Chief Executive to ask if they’ll hold a reception but if he doesn’t hear back, he’ll put it to a vote at the next council meeting.

“I’ve already written out my motion today, in fact I’ll be submitting it tomorrow. So it will be going before the next city council meeting. I feel this is important because this referendum has engaged a wide variety of people outside of the regular party circles and I think those people should be thanked in a formal way”.

Councillor Rock’s request coincides with Dublin City council’s social inclusion week, where communities get together to highlight the importance of treating people equally regardless of their background.

He says a civic reception falls under that category.

“I do feel it is a form of social inclusion. I feel as though people from a wide variety of ages, a wide variety of professions, interests and incomes all got involved in this campaign in a tremendously energetic way”.

Dublin City Council aren’t the only ones being asked to honour the Yes Equality team, a similar request has been made to Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council by Labour's Deirdre Kingston.
