€2.7m was paid to a hotel in the city to house homeless people over a two and a half year period.

The figures paid to the Gresham averaged at about €100,000 per month and were made between August 2015 and February 2018.

Some 95 different families were accommodated during this period, including 128 adults and 187 children.

The hotel stopped housing homeless families last January, after its owners, Riu Hotels and Resorts, said renovation plans would reduce capacity.

The Spanish company bought the hotel from Nama last year, for a fee of roughly €92m.

The Sunday Times reports that the overall amount paid by the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive to hotels was €46.93m last year.

The figures from the DRHE have been released under the freedom of information act as the contract has ended.

Details of payments to other hotels have not been released.
