The car used by Pope Francis during his visit to Ireland will be donated to a homeless charity.

The Skoda Rapid car will be used by staff at the Mater Dei homeless hub of Crossare, the social care agency of the Archdiocese of Dublin.

According to the Archdiocese, the hub is 'constantly' full, with a family always waiting to move in as soon as another leaves.

Staff will use the car to take families who are moving to view their next accommodation, and will be in 'daily use'.

Conor Hickey, director of Crosscare services, said they will be 'delighted' with the gift, adding that he hoped "that families who were struggling in this way would find this gesture from the Pope of some comfort".

The car's set to be donated to the agency in the coming days.

However, the number of the plate - SCV 1, which means Stato della Citta del Vaticano or Vatican City - will be changed before the car enters regular use.
