Children should travel for free this festive season, according to Labour Senator Kevin Humphreys.

He's calling for a repeat of the summer's public transport promotion that saw child Leap Card holders travel for free on all Dublin Bus, Luas, DART and selected Bus Eireann and Irish Rail services.

1.8 million free trips were taken by under 18s during July.

Senator Humphreys says it was a huge success, and is encouraging families to take a trip into the city centre this Christmas.

He says it would be a great boost for businesses;

"We are running into the Christmas season now, we want to try and reduce the amount of traffic in our cities and towns. So kids go free for the month of December would encourage parents to leave their cars at home and bring their children into town, to boost the trade."
