There's been a breakthrough in the junior cert reform row.

A proposal has been agreed between the Department of Education and the heads of the teaching unions.

This row has centered on the extent that teachers would have to mark their own pupils papers when continuous assessment becomes part of the junior cert.

It led to two days of strikes in December and January.

Now a plan has been agreed by the heads of the ASTI and the TUI and the Education Minister Jan O'Sullivan.

The proposal will be put to the executives of the unions on Friday evening.

We'll find out the details of the plan when the document is published afterwards and teachers will be balloted on its contents in the autumn.
