Plans for a tribute to Katie Taylor will only progress with the world champion's agreement.

That's according to Wicklow County Council who says there's a desire to honour Katie Taylor's achievements.

Thousands of fans in Bray last night welcomed home the the undisputed champion of the world, following her defeat of Belgian Delfine Persoon in New York last weekend.

Bray Councillor Joe Behan said they'll respect the wishes of Katie and her family:

"There are statues to people like Paul O'Connell in Limerick and Sonya O'Sullivan in Cork. Something like that could only be done if Katie herself was happy with it," he said.

"I discussed it with [Katie's mother] Brigid in the airport there the other day and I get the impression that's not neccessarily something that she'd want to have happen at this stage."
