With June on the horizon, and as Dublin basks in warm sunshine, barbeques have been banned from Phoenix Park.

Visitors to the park had been allowed to cook on the disposable trays in a trial which has been running since 2010, but those in charge say that time is now over.

The Office of Public Works has blamed fire damage to things like benches, as well as large amounts of litter.

In a statement, the OPW said it has "recently ceased the pilot having regard to issues of fire safety and public health and safety."

"Large amount of litter and other materials were being generated and discarded in these areas and there were instances of fire damage to the park grounds".

Green Party Councillor Ciaran Cuffe expects people will just ignore the ban, and is planning to ask Dublin City Council to set up designated barbequing areas.

"I would acknowledge that there are some difficulties with tables being burnt with disposable barbeques, but I think we should work with those who barbeque".

"If you go to any other city around that world, parks have places to barbeque", he said.
