There's a call for so-called "bait bikes" to be used on college campuses to cut down on the number of robberies.
It comes as figures provided to Dublin TD, Roisin Shortall, show Gardai in Dublin made 16 arrests in the year to March when the decoy bikes were used.
They were left in theft hot spots on 50 occasions as part of Operation Chain.
The sting involves monitoring the bikes so detectives can make arrests when they're being stolen.
Deputy Shortall has told 98FM News she'd now like to see the operation to be rolled out to places like university campuses as well as other towns and cities around Ireland.
"Obviously the responsibility is with bike owners themselves to make sure they have sturdy bike locks, but we do know that criminals are using equipment that can cut through locks. So it's important that the Gardai continue with this programme and extend it. They've done it on a pilot basis so far and in a limited way. But I'd call on them now to extend it."
