With an incredible time of 2:13:23, Asefa Bekele of Ethiopia has claimed the 39th Dublin Marathon.

Over 20,000 are taking part in this year's event through the heart of the city centre, and Bekele has prevailed after setting off at nine o'clock.

Many international elite distance runners are competing against Ireland's top athletes, while women's participation is also being celebrated.

Nationalist and feminist Constant Markievitz is appearing on the finishers' medals this year.

The race has grown ten-fold since it's inception almost four decades ago - with the number of female participants growing from just 70 in 1980 to 7,000 today.

The first group of the runners are expected to hit the finish line from half eleven onwards, while others push to make it across the finish-line by five o'clock this evening.
