Gardai have dealt with an average of nearly 100 domestic abuse incidents every day this year - the equivalent of one every 15 minutes.

New figures show 24,686 domestic abuse incidents were reported to Gardai between the start of this year and September 9th.

These include a variety of offences, such as violence and breach of a barring order.

Over a third of the incidents were in the Dublin region, involving just under 9,000 cases.

Noeline Blackwell, from the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, doesn't think the problem has reduced since Covid restrictions started to ease.

“We are still hearing a worrying high level of intimate partner abuse, we are hearing about sexual violence and we are hearing far too much of that. We are not seeing a reduction", she says.

Minister of State for Justice, Hildegarde Naughton, says tackling domestic abuse, and providing supports for victims, is a key priority for the government.
