Nine out of ten passengers are satisfied with public transport.

They were asked about comfort, cost, reliability and other factors, with Dublin Bus and the Luas performing particularly well.

The survey was carried out on behalf of the National Transport Authority by Kantar Millward Brown, and took place from early October until mid-November - before the Luas Cross City Line opened.

One in four believes the service provided by public transport has improved over the 12-month period, 91% were happy with how clean vehicles were, and 95% felt safe at the hands of their driver.

Public transport apps and websites have an overall satisfaction rating of 85%, including TFI’s Real Time Ireland app and the Leap top-up app.

Although the survey was carried out before changes to traffic flows at College Green which have forced a number of bus routes to divert, passengers were surveyed around an Irish Rail strike.

Anne Graham, CEO of the National Transport Authority, admitted that the results were "higher than we had expected", adding that "we will not be complacent about this".

"Public transport operates in busy cities, across country roads and connects people across the country, and provides challenges every day", she said.

“The findings have also revealed the areas where customers are less satisfied, and this will inform the NTA’s work programme with operators.”
