A 5-month-old baby has died following a road crash on the Athlone Bypass.
It happened at around quarter past 2 this afternoon.
The baby boy received serious injuries when the car he was travelling in collided with a barrier.
He was removed to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe where he was pronounced dead.
A 3-year-old girl was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The male driver and female passenger - both in their late 20s - were uninjured.
The Athlone Bypass is closed eastbound between junction 13 and 11 is currently closed and local diversions are in place.
Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are at the scene.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them at Athlone Garda Station.
