A young mum has been released from jail after pleading guilty to possessing a loaded gun at Connolly Station in Dublin.

The court heard 21 year old Nikita Murtagh of Mariners Port in Dublin’s north inner city committed the crime out of misplaced family loyalty.

The court heard Nikita Murtagh- who has no previous convictions - was a fresh face who wasn’t known to gardai.

She was observed last July at Connolly Station pushing a buggy with a young child in it and then handing over a white paper bag to a man.

In the bag - was a shoebox with a loaded semi-automatic pistol in.

Murtagh was later arrested at a bus stop at Dublin Airport and told gardai in interviews that she didn’t know what was in the box.

The mum of one was sentenced to three years in jail - but, her sentence was backdated to when she first went into custody last July with the balance suspended, meaning she’s a free woman.

Nikita mouthed ‘Oh My God’ and started crying when she heard this.

Judge Tony Hunt said he was doing this in consideration for her child and told her to behave herself and stay out of trouble.
