200 extra beds are going to be made available to rough sleepers in Dublin as part of the government's Winter Ready initiative.

A homeless man, originally from Poland, was found dead near Christchurch on Monday night. It's believed the man, who was in his 40s, had "complex" needs.

The Junior Housing Minister, Damien English, has offered his sympathies to the man's family.

He explained that the man "had been engaging with our services over the last year", and explained that "every local authority has been asked to have their plans in place" for winter.

That includes extra emergency beds for rough sleepers.

As part of its 'Winter Ready' campaign, the government is also encouraging people to make sure they are prepared for dark evenings and adverse weather.

Following Storm Ophelia and Storm Emma, people are being told to make sure their home is stocked with fuel and food, and make sure all exposed pipes are insulated in case of freezing weather.

People living in an area prone to flooding are being told to have a food plan in place, and to check in on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.

In the event of more extreme weather, warnings will be presented in three categories-yellow, orange and red.
