Micheál Martin has been formally nominated as Taoiseach in a special Dáil sitting at the convention centre.

TDs are now debating his appointment ahead of formal votes around lunchtime.

Martin has been proposed by TDs Norma Foley and James O'Connor.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald will also been nominated for the role.

Her TDs Pearse Doherty and Mairead Farrell put forward the nomination.

Kerry TD Norma Foley proposed the Fianna Fail leader as Taoiseach:

"There have been trying and testing days over these past number of months."

"But as always a hard beginning maketh a good ending."

"It is now my very great honour to begin our work together, by proposing that Dáil Éireann nominate Deputy Micheál Martin for nomination to the Office of the Taoiseach."

Sinn Fein: This Government "Doesn't Represent Change"

Sinn Fein's Eoin O'Broin says today doesn't represent the change people voted for in February.

He says he will be voting for Mary Lou McDonald as Taoiseach.

"Sinn Fein won the popular vote in the General Election."

"Mary Lou would be an emminently better Taoiseach to deliver on housing, healthcare, childcare, and Irish unity than either Micheál Martin or Leo Varadkar."

"I'll certainly be proud to vote for her today."

Speculation Around Who Gets Ministries

There's also plenty of speculation around the breakdown of cabinet Ministries.

It looks as though Fine Gael will retain the finance, foreign affairs, justice and business portfolios.

While Fianna Fáil will take housing, public expenditure and possibly education.

It's expected the Departments of Agriculture and Rural Affairs will be merged and given to Minister Heather Humphreys.

While the climate and transport portfolios will be merged into one controlled by the Green Party.
