Rory McIlroy pipped world number one Brooks Koepka to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year award for the third time.

The 30-year-old secured the FedEx Cup title last month by winning the Tour Championship and he also won The Players Championship and Canadian Open.

McIlroy ended the season with 14 top 10's but once again there was no success in the majors.

Koepka won the PGA Championship, finished second in the Masters and the US Open and fourth in The Open.

McIlroy is already turning his attention to 2020 and believes he'll be in a better place than ever to win an elusive first Masters title.

The four-time major winner has also admitted that he plans to play at the Irish Open next year if as expected it is confirmed for the end of May.

McIlroy skipped the Irish Open at Lahinch in July because of his schedule on the PGA Tour.
