An Irishman has died after falling from a moving train in Thailand.

The Associated Press reports that the man has been named as 45-year-old Patrick Ward.

He was travelling on an Irish passport which notes that he was born in New Zealand.

Mr Ward was travelling from the capital Bangkok towards Kanchanaburi in the west of the country when the incident occurred.

Police Major Kiatisak Kerdchok of the Sai Yok police told the Associated Press that he had opened the door of a train carriage at a scenic location near a well-known waterfall when he fell.

He fell seven to eight metres down a slope and his body was later retrieved by emergency services.

A full autopsy is due to be carried out today in Bangkok, with police also due to question the other members of the tour group Mr Ward was travelling with.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it has been notified of an Irish person's death in the country and is ready to provide consular assistance.
