Tinkerers and inventors are gathering in the Liberties for Science Hack Day at the Dublin Hackerspace in Blackpitts, Dublin 8.

Over the next 36 hours, they're going to get to work on gadgets, apps and gizmos without stopping for sleep.

One of the projects on the agenda is a prosthetic specially designed for a rower who lost his arm.

Artists and software developers are also hard at work in the marathon session.

Dave Curran from Tyrrellstown in west Dublin says the public is welcome to come down and join in the fun.

"It's starting in TOG in Dublin today and finishing about four tomorrow afternoon. If you want to go to the website, sciencehackdaydublin.com, you can come along and see what's going on, and ou can call in as well," he said.

"Come down, have a look, you'll just see a bunch of people trying to create things in a short period of time, trying to have fun. I definitely encourage anyone to come down and have a look -- and maybe join in if they can."
