Dublin City Councillors are calling for more to be done to tackle hate crimes on the LGBTQ+ community in the city.

A number of Fine Gael councillors will be tabling an emergency motion at tonight’s meeting, citing their “deep concern” for the safety of the gay community and other minorities.

They’re calling for officers to receive specialised training in handling these types of crime, an increased Garda presence on the streets and an awareness campaign to promote Diversity Officers within the Gardaí.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee says a number of steps have already been taken to tackle this issue.

"There's a new inclusion and diversity strategy within An Garda Siochana which specifically looks at this area as well.

"You also have reporting of hate crime which is now on the Pulse system.

"Obviously when we enact the hate crime legislation later on this year, that will give us a greater indication and support the Gardai in making sure anyone who carries out these crimes are brought to justice."
