Halo: The Master Chief Collection is coming to Steam this year, Microsoft announced during a recent episode of Inside Xbox.

Rumours about the Master Chief Collection coming to PC have been making their rounds for a while, but nobody expected a Steam release.

At best, fans expected Halo on PC to be exclusive to the Windows Store, so this news is doubly surprising and exciting.

Halo: Reach will also be added to the collection on Xbox One and PC, with the campaign being free for anyone who already owns the MCC, and the campaign and firefight modes being premium add-ons included with Xbox Game Pass.

The games will launch in chronological order on PC, so Reach will come first, then Halo: CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, and finally Halo 4. 343 Industries say that this is to “to ensure each one is right" (emphasis theirs) and will save players from having to wait until all the games are ready.

There’s no release date for Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC other than “later this year”, but the Steam page is live for you to add it to your Wishlist.

As a lifelong Halo fan, it’s exciting to see one of the greatest franchises in gaming be given a fresh lease of life, and it will be interesting to see what kind of esport scene pops up around the PC version.
