The family of murdered Portlaoise prison officer Brian Stack wants an independent expert to examine Garda errors in the investigation into his death.

The Garda Commissioner apologised to the family today for shortcomings in the investigation into his murder by the IRA In 1983.

During a 90 minute meeting Drew Harris told them a file is to be sent to the DPP but Gardai do not believe there's enough evidence to bring a prosecution.

Brian Stack's son, Austin (pictured) wants the entire case to be reviewed.

"The Commissioner has given us a verbal apology for those errors," he said. "From our perspective now, we will be asking for an independent police expert from outside the state to carry out an independent review into my father's murder."
