A specially decorated Luas filled with tinsel and festive cheer will be parked at Connolly Station until 7pm this evening. People are invited to drop in shoeboxes filled with practical items like socks, toothpaste and shower gel which will be given to the homeless this Christmas.

Transdev and Inner City Helping Homeless are hoping to break last year's record of 20,000 shoeboxes for the homeless community with its annual Fill A Luas event.

CEO Anthony Flynn, told 98fm: 'What we want to do is show children in emergency accommodation some empathy and compassion and get the spirit of Christmas back into their lives. The public have been very generous so far this morning with presents being dropped off that will be given to those children and families.'

'We are inviting everyone to come along to Connolly Station today and take part in what will be a fantastic day of events, this is a day we want to see everyone get involved and come along and show their support. We will be on site from now until 7pm and are hoping to beat our previous record of 26,000 shoeboxes donated on the day. If you are in Dublin today please come and join us.'
