A community centre in Tallaght in facing closure over rising insurance costs.

Up to 300 people use Killinarden Community Centre each week. That includes after-school clubs, youth groups and activities for senior citizens.

But the premises could be forced to shut.

According to the Irish Independent, the cost of insurance has risen from €8,000 in 2011 to €34,500. That's a rise of more than 300 percent.

€20,000 of the current premium has been paid but €10,000 has been outstanding since July.

It's the latest in a series of centres that are facing rising insurance costs and the threat of closure.

Compensation Culture

It comes as new laws are considered that could see insurance scammers jailed for up to 10 years for lying under oath.

It's part of a government crackdown on compensation culture.

The Irish Independent reports that there are plans to amend a bill currently before the Dail, that would see the offence of perjury extended to anyone giving evidence before a commission of investigation or tribunal.

It follows an investigation by the paper which found some lawyers and GPs are encouraging patients to bring claims.

Some solicitors are also asking doctors to amend medical reports for personal injury claims.
